Description
As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks qualified applicants for a twelve-month appointment as Semler Endowed Chair of Ethics to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by interacting primarily with graduate students and regularly with other internal and external constituents toward the development of ethics in various fields, the successful candidate will represent and implement the vision of bioethics across academic programs within Marian University. Prospective candidates should have capacity for excellence in administrative, pedagogical, and research responsibilities, and should possess the ability to teach the richness of the Catholic tradition while also attending to the broad and ecumenical needs of a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. This position will intersect with numerous university leaders including, but not limited to, the Executive Vice President and Provost, Executive Director of Catholic Franciscan Leadership Programs, Vice President of Mission Integration, Vice President of Mission and Ministry, academic deans, and chairs of theology and philosophy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively engages the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling our Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Designs, teaches, and continually assesses bioethics curricula
  • Leads the development and implementation of San Damiano Scholars Program for graduate students in health sciences
  • Provides consultative services regarding bioethics to departments across Marian University
  • Participates in the development of the annual ethics bowl competition, which is hosted at Marian.
  • Engages in research, scholarship, and other professional activities.
  • Reviews and advises on ethical policies/issues/complaints as assigned by university leadership
  • Actively participates in the life of the campus and university service, including participation in shared governance and co-curricular programs
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University
  • Ph.D. in theological bioethics or equivalent degree
  • Academic and scholarly experience at the level of assistant or associate professor
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education
  • Experience in biomedical ethics
  • Potential for ongoing research, publication, and activity in professional association.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in the ministry of Catholic health care
  • Fluency in Spanish (preferred)
