Quality Lab Technician

Extruded Solutions is Hydro's largest and most global business area. Our Business Area supplies aluminum profiles and profile-based solutions in various applications ranging from windows and furniture to cars and cruise ships. Within Extruded Solutions, we have business area staff functions based in Oslo, but we also have four core business units; Extrusion Europe, Extrusion North America, Building Systems and Precision Tubing.

Job Location: North Liberty, IN


This position is critical to the day to day operations in the Laboratory for testing and certification. Candidate must have proven problem-solving capabilities in real time and the technical proficiency to understand the metallurgy of tensile, mechanical and chemical testing. This position reports to the Quality Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Required to report all non-conforming material immediately to Quality Manager
  • Ability to make continuous improvements recommendations to Quality Manager
  • Assists Quality Manager in the performance of his duties to meet customers specific requirements.
  • Manages daily lab functions for all on-site mechanical and/or chemical testing laboratory
  • Builds and Maintains profiles within QTS and updates the system as required to maintain compliance to CQ Policies and procedures

  • Informs the CSR's with necessary customer requirement to facilitate the required mechanical and chemical testing of products
  • Assists and or leads off-site sorting of products either in-house or at customers locations
  • Maintains the QTS testing equipment and certifies it is functioning properly.
  • Conducts a daily audit of the QTS system to confirm the operational readiness.
  • Capable of prioritizing tasks to meet goals and ensure product quality
  • Analyze quality data and prepare reports.
  • Perform quality testing of products in the lab as well on the Extrusion floor.
  • Leads and implement internal audits and reports audit findings.
  • Assists the Quality Manager in implementation of record management procedures
  • Creates lab certifications for products being tested in the lab. Works with customer service to coordinate the release and shipment of referrals for NCM to the customer
  • Trained to effectively operate equipment in the laboratory ranging from CNC sample preparation to tensile testing and measurement of parts with all instruments in the lab including the Keyence, and the Haas Mini mill
  • Must understand the function of the QTS laboratory information management system and how it interfaces with the Zwick laboratory hardware
  • Accountable for compliance to standards on all remaining manual processes that were not able to be locked down through hardware and software upgrades
  • Understands all applicable industry specs, and deploys those requirements at a 100 % compliance level within the lab

    Job Requirements:
  • Interprets engineering drawings, aluminum standards, data publications and understands customer requirements / standards
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively
  • Ability to multitask, maintain priorities and take direction from multiple sources.
  • Must be computer literate, able to use various computer programs / systems in theperformance of his / her duties
  • Candidate shoud have compliantmindset, be ethical with ahigh degreeof integrityas thesearecritical to the role
  • Works with the Quality Manager to investigate complaints, updating internal management process. (EX. Complaint Pro Quality Management System)
  • Instructs the Supervisor and Extrusion employees on the Quality Management System, procedures and work instructions.
  • Inspects defective parts when they are received back from customers, informing Quality Manager of inspection outcome

Education and Work Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • A college degree is preferred, with equivalent automotive work experience is required
  • Prior manufacturing experience desirable with experience working with Quality Management Systems. (EX. ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016)
