Cybersecurity Engineer (ISSE)

Position Summary:

As a Cybersecurity Engineer (ISSE), you will provide System and Security Engineering support for Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD).

Clearance Requirement:

  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret security clearance
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Create new or update Operational System (OS) images to meet application requirements including space, startup, accounts, recovery, and memory optimizations
  • Utilize containerization technologies like Docker or Kubernetes to deploy and manage containerized applications.
  • Create, Configure, and manage virtual machines using tools like VMware or Hyper-V to host applications as needed.
  • Create and manage virtual machine snapshots for intermediate testing, backups, and rollback
  • Install and configure software applications on physical, virtual machines or containers.
  • Perform testing of applications to ensure basic functionality and compatibility within the environment.
  • Troubleshoot any installation or deployment issues to ensure applications run smoothly.
  • Conduct and review scans of Applications and Information Systems using Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS) and Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP).
  • Harden systems by applying recommendations from ACAS or SCAP or research to mitigate or resolve findings from scans or applicable requirements in Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG)s
  • Create and update vulnerability Plan of Actions and Milestones (POA&M).
  • Maintain the IS security program and policies including configuration management plan and system security plan.
  • Conduct risk and vulnerability assessment of planned and installed information systems to find vulnerabilities, risks and protection needs.
  • Interpret information security and information assurance policies, processes and practices.
  • Conduct research using MITRE's Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) and National Vulnerability Database (NVD) along with notifications from DoD and open web to find applicable vulnerabilities and mitigations.
  • Develop or implement automation scripts to streamline repetitive tasks like provisioning, configuration, and deployment.
  • Work closely with developers to understand application requirements, get test procedures, and ensure smooth deployment.
  • Communicate effectively with operations teams to ensure infrastructure supports application needs.
  • Stay up to date on the latest technologies and trends in containerization, virtualization, and application deployment.
Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • Must be IAT Level II compliant (CompTIA Security+ or equivalent)
  • At least 2 years' experience with security features and/or vulnerability of various operating systems as defined by NSA, NIST, DISA (STIGS) and USCYBERCOM.
  • Experience with IA vulnerability testing and related and system test tools; e.g. NMap, ACAS/Nessus, Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP)
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least two (2) years of RMF package creation experience
  • Familiarization with NSWCPD Organization and associated Cybersecurity initiatives
  • Familiarization and confidence in executing IAW DoD Instructions, NAVSEA guidance, and NSWCPD RMF process directives
Physical Demands and Expectations:
  • Up to 15% travel
  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
