Job Description

Job Objective:

The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of campers in the pool area, cleanliness of the pool area and compliance to camp pool policies. Additionally, will serve as a program aide in support of other camp activities.

Camp Dates: May through the end of July.

What You Will Do:

  • Work as a team with all other lifeguards in maintaining a high standard of safety for campers/guests and for pool operations.
  • Understand the pool rules and demand camper/guest compliance.
  • Adhere to minimum guard requirements when swimmers are in the pool.
  • Provide swimming instruction, as assigned.
  • Conduct swimming tests for each new camp.
  • Communicate pool rules to campers/guests when required.
  • Perform routine pool maintenance including:
    • Vacuum the pool
    • Sweep the pool deck, organize and maintain deck furniture
    • Daily clean bathrooms, shower roots and changing areas.
    • Power wash pool deck weekly.
  • Assist with camper registration.
  • Assisting with or leading a camper class or choice activity.
  • Supervise campers.
  • Participate as assigned in all camp activities.
  • Work in the snack shop as assigned.
  • Assist in setting up or cleaning areas of camp as assigned.
  • Monitor camper activity in locker rooms.
  • Comply with camp policies.
  • Observe the spiritual emphasis of camp.
  • Keep living quarters clean and neat at all times.
  • Practice courtesy in sharing living space with other camp staff members.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Participate in staff meetings, evaluation sessions and devotion times.
  • Must carry radio while camp is in session on your person.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Leadership.

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Be a High School Student or above

Background Checks: This position will require a background check to be completed and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Must be at least age 15. Must have experience working with children. Must have experience in relevant camp activities.

Certifications: Must already have, or willing to complete, Lifeguard Certification, including CPR, AED and First Aid. Must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 30 days of employment. Must be able to complete provided training courses for camp activities as assigned.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to perform the essential elements of the position as described in the Red Cross lifeguard manual.
  • Must be a Christian who demonstrates the principles of Christian living.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage time well in order to accomplish multiple tasks by a set schedule.
  • Able to relate God to campers in the natural setting of camp.
  • Ability to plan a lesson or activity
  • Ability to teach a concept or lead an activity for children or adults
  • Ability to train others to lead or teach an activity.
  • Able to guide, direct, and supervise daily duties and responsibilities of other staff members, as assigned
  • Able to communicate well with other staff, campers and supervisors

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises campers, guests, and staff while in the pool area.

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Able to walk for extended periods of time and across uneven terrain.
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting materials up to 25 pounds and carry it for at least 50 feet.
  • Be physically fit enough to keep up with daily camp activities.

Travel: Position may require occasional local travel, including the use of camp vehicles across the camp property.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a residential camp setting; Work will be expected at varying and flexible times, including overnight and some scheduled weekends.
